TJMax Security Breach

Is this old news?????

Dallas Business Journal:

TJX posts more notices
TJX Companies Inc. is letting shoppers in its stores nationwide know that data was stolen from its computers late last year.

Hackers broke into a system that manages credit and debit card transactions as well as checks and merchandise returns for customers throughout the United States, a release from Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum's office said. TJX (NYSE: TJX) said it might not be possible to determine the exact number of consumers whose personal information may have been stolen in part due to the technology used by the intruders, the release said.

When contacted by McCollum's office, TJX subsequently agreed to display notices about the breach in its stores, the release said. The notice gives general information including the company's Web site, www.tjx.com and a telephone number, (866) 484-6978, for additional credit protection information.

A number of government agencies are conducting investigations as to whether TJX, as a result of the computer intrusion, may have violated laws regarding consumer protection and related matters, the company stated in its quarterly report to the Securities and Exchange Commission filed Thursday. Thirty-seven state attorneys general are participating in a multi-state attorneys general investigation, and TJX has received nearly identical civil investigative demands or subpoenas from 11 of these attorneys general, the company said.

Putative class actions have been filed against TJX in state and federal courts in Alabama, California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Ohio and Puerto Rico, and in provincial Canadian courts on behalf of customers, including all customers in the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada, whose transaction data were allegedly compromised by the computer intrusion, the company said in its quarterly report. Putative class actions have also been filed against TJX in federal court in Massachusetts on behalf of all financial institutions that issued credit and debit cards purportedly used at TJX stores during the period of the computer intrusion, the report stated.

An apparel and home fashions retailer based in Framingham, Mass., TJX is the parent company of TJ Maxx, Marshalls, AJ Wright and HomeGoods stores. There are 14 TJ Maxx and 15 Marshalls stores in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
