Automated Calls... Constantly

We've had cell phones only for years, and finally broke down and got a landline round about November of last year. That's when the calling started, to our landline home number.

"BEEP. This is Chase card services, calling in regards to your account ending in XXXX. You are receiving this call because of an alert on your account; your account balance is (less than $100 from your limit/less than $10 from your limit/too close to your limit/we don't actually know your limit nor do we care, we're just bored and the boss left early). Please call..."

And that's about as far as I've ever gotten before shutting off the answering machine or deleting. It's a machine calling, an automated call with nothing but a voice recording on the other end, and they call constantly. I'm talking up to several times each day. Needless to say, we do not nor have we ever had an account with Chase; they must be calling for someone who had this number before we did. We have caller ID but it only says "800 service" with a different number every time.

Short of calling the phone company and switching numbers (which I have been seriously considering; these people have interrupted too many hard-earned naps), how do I make them stop?

You need to call Chase and tell them they are calling the wrong person. If they continue to call, send them a letter CMRRR. You have to at least make an effort to inform them they are calling the wrong number. Until you inform them, they can claim bona fide error if you should sue them under the TCPA. You could always change your number but you may have the same thing happen again. People who get collection calls do change their numbers and you could get another number with numerous collections tied to it.

And welcome to IC!

Thank you, Hannah! Do you know who I might try to call at Chase to get this phone number flagged as inaccurate for that account? Just any old customer service I pull off the web, or what?

If you have a local Chase Bank, call them first and be sure to speak to a supervisor in customer service. If they can't take care of it, they will be able to direct you to who you need to call. Here's their contacts per their website.
