| Dell? My computer broke while I was gone for a week (half of the screen has nothing on it) so I decided to upgrade to a new Dell laptop. I signed up for their preferred account and was given a credit limit of $1000.
Is there anything good that I can get for $1000 at Dell?
Do you know of any way to get my credit limit increased?
Thanks and god bless,
maymay |

| You should be able to get something for $1000, but it won't be fancy.

What do you mean by fancy?
I'm mostly concerned about not waiting 2 years for Microsoft Word, Excel, or Powerpoint to load. |

Most nowadays will come with 512 and you don't want anything less, but it is simple to buy and install more memory.

| If you want your computer to be lightening fast get 1024 of memory, at least an 80 gig hard drive, and look for 2.0 GHz.

| It's a 1.6 GHz, but it looks good and if you're not running web cams or software that needs a lot of power it should be fine. It has shared memory, but as I said it depends on what you want to do with your system. If you like to game a lot you need a large hard drive. If you run software like excel a lot or stats software, then you need a lot of memory.

Thanks,
maymay | 80 gigs is quite a bit of room and I have small movies on my computers; nothing too big and yes, I think 2.0GHz for 150.00 more is fine.

| You can also buy external hard drives (I have a 250 GB one that we use for backups) later. They are a couple of hundred dollars, but you don't need to even think about it until your hard drive is getting full, and by then you might even be ready for an upgraded computer.
I'm not saying you need to do this. I'm just pointing out that if the hard drive does get full, there are reasonably-priced options for storage.

| I just purchased a Dimension 9200 desktop with a duo core 2.4 GHZ processor, 320 gig HD, and 4 MB ram. That was under 1600.00, I also purchased a base latitude laptop with 2.0 GHZ and 1 MB ram with a upgraded screen and that was under 900.
I have an insprion laptop I got last July and I have dropped it one to many times...
If your looking for a laptop that should be relatively easy to get under 1K |

| Are you limiting to (d)hell simply because they gave you credit?
If not, there are some basic boxes that can be purchased and upgraded for far less money. I got one of the real basic Frys computers, added the extra 512K to it and already had an extra copy of XP to load on to the thing...I was good to go for less than $250 at the time (less than two years ago).
