Laid Off Today

I sorta knew it was coming -- the company needed to downsize and get more capital to survive, and I was the engineer with the least overlap with what the new form of the company needed.

I'm pretty sure I'll be okay -- DH has a great job with a stable company, and I'm in a great specialty with a lot of prospects.

The company I'd really like to work for is doing well, and it may just finally happen that the 10th job interview there is the charm.

Sorry to hear about the layoff, hope the new job works out great for you! Take this time to relax, a you might find yourself working harder on the new job until you get the hang of things.

Could be a blessing in disguise (although you may be retired from your new position by the time you read this). Good luck bro!

And on the bright side, it gives you some time to displace MayMay from the arcade

Sometimes things happen for a reason and if your hubby is in a stable position and you've got something to fall back on (nowadays you better have a back up plan), you'll be fine. This might be a step toward where you're suppose to go next...hell take a break!

I agree with roybean. Things happen for a reason, and when one door closes often a new (and better) one opens.

Good luck, and you always have a shoulder to cry on here.

Yes, well, with the kitty cancer going on, I'm hoping for a part-time gig for a month or so until that's settled down.

I'm going to take a small break. I'd really like to do more teaching, though that wouldn't be enough to get the student loans paid off, alas.

Hang in there Dire....you will get that job at the company you want to work for.

Its more important to like where you are working than how much money you make. I worked at IBM and you spend so much time emailing people to tell them you read their last email and will read their response to this email that you end up actually working 12 minutes a day.

Sorry about the job. I've been relaxing for over a year now but I quit, not laid off. You'll get something better, I know you will!

Well, I don't know if I'd exactly call going to law school "relaxing."

It's a lot more relaxing than dealing with that bitch I worked for.

You know, everyone is right, a lot of times a layoff or firing can be a blessing in disguise (did I spell that right?). I have been there before a couple of times. My biggest heartbreak came when I was a tech job with the infamous AOL back in the late 90's, and I really loved the damn job great pay and bennies and one day they decided to shut our center down and move it to Bangladore, India. The result, the best gig I have ever had, it's stable, great pay and bennies and best of all non-tech.

Spinn,
Where did you work in IBM. I worked for them back in 93 and got laid off in 95 out of the Rochester, MN STD (Storage Tech Div) no notice or warning. Just came to work one morning around 7:30 and was escorted to a room where they had me sign a million papers and took my ID and said bye bye to me by 8:30.
What sucked was I moved from Chicago to that COLD, Boring town to be with them. I thought I would be there for life.
Oh well, life goes on............
