1 How long ago was the judgment? Have you gone to court house to get the file? How do they claim to have served you if you were out of the country?

You may be able to have the judgment vacated for improper service if that is the case. But, that may be a temporary fix if the debt was not past SOL, or the SOL was tolled by your absence.

Judgments can stay on your report for 7 years or until the SOL is expired. SOL for a judgment can be 10 or 20 years in some cases. You can try to negotiate removal.

2 They will mark as settled if you pay? Very nice of them to do something that is required by law. They are not doing you any favors there, and a paid negative account is in many cases no better than an unpaid negative account.

Is the account past SOL? Do they have a legal right to collect? When did the account default? You can negotiate here also, but I would want to answer those questions first.
