The reporting period that a debt can be reported on your credit report is seven years, and is set by federal law.
The Statute of Limitations that varies from state to state is the time period in which you are legally liable for payment of the debt. In most states, creditors can attempt to collect a debt even after the SOL, but if you are sued and go to court and raise the affirmative defense of SOL, you can get the case dismissed.
Texas has some very consumer-friendly laws, about which I know almost nothing. But if you post your questions in the credit forum, I'm sure you'll get some help.
