Credit repair rip off, now what?
Hello,
I signed up with a credit repair agency 6 months ago, and I am starting to realize I am being ripped. ( I know, don't tell me). I have decided to take on the credit repair battle myself. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions of where to start? There are some negative things that came off my credit, but the "biggies" are still there. And I have no idea what my scores are or how much they have been raised(if any). I am so what afraid of inquiring because I heard that inquiring will decrease scores as well. Do I need to start by requesting my credit report again from the 3 agencies, and what types of conflicts will have since this company has been disputing on my behalf??
Things on my credit: #1 late payments on Car loan, Car repossession from a joint account.(I was a co-signor) 1 credit card charge off from 2000, 1 credit card account that was closed (paid off), 3-4 various inquires, Wachovia Bank account--overdrawn ~$600 from 2001, but keeps reporting. I also have student loans reflecting, but showing "paid as agrees"
So with this, how hard will it be for me to dispute these items? Also is there a difference when your credit is "cleaned" versus negative items being removed?

Sounds like you signed up with the wrong firm. Not all are of ill repute.
The first step would be to get your credit reports and determine what as already been disputed and how many times.

When you get your own report or score it is a "soft inquiry" and has no effect on score. It is hidden from lenders, and will only show on your copy of the report.

Yes, you should get current copies to be certain what is there before you dispute. You may run into some issues if the CRA tries to say the items were previously disputed, or they mark dispute of an item as frivolous.

1 credit card charge off from 2000, This should come off soon if not already past the 7 year mark. What was the month of charge off?
1 credit card account that was closed (paid off), negative or paid as agreed?
3-4 various inquires, after 6 months they should not hurt your score much and will fall off after 2 years
Wachovia Bank account--overdrawn ~$600 from 2001, but keeps reporting. Has this one been disputed?
I also have student loans reflecting, but showing "paid as agrees" if they are not negative, do not dispute them

PALE RIDER,
in response to things on my credit:
1. Car repo on the joint account was October 2002
2.Charge off month was March
3. The paid credit card is showing up negative, not "paid as agreed"
4. The Wachovia account has been disputed, but they are now sending me pay off options, so i am assuming the credit repair agency is still working on it
i talked to the credit repair agency and they are still disputing on my behalf, and i am waiting for more updated credit reports.
Can anyone tell me what the next step is after the items come back "verified" after being disputed?

This should have come off by now. If the CRO doesn't get it done, you should dispute as obsolete. How old are the reports you are looking at? Could it have come off and you aren't aware of it? - you said you have been working with them for about 6 months now.

Can you be more specific as to what is negative? If its a very old account, or you have a thin file, sometimes its mere presence is helping more than the negative part is hurting.

Their mere act of disputing it may have woken Wachovia up enough to try and settle this with you.

Make sure that you get the hard copies of your reports and not the on line versions....you first need to see what is on the reports before we start telling you what or how to dispute. Remember if you send for the free annual report snd you dispute something, the CRA can take 45 days to verify. If you buy the reports or you are entitled because you've been denied credit the CRA HAS to verify in 30 days.
Get the reports and holler back.

Whatever a credit repair agency can do for you...you can do yourself. Just start reading and ask questions.
