And since the wine will be open by that time, you might find yourself dining at the local pokey for driving while tipsy And *that* could be a tragedy...all that good wine left in the bottle being poured out at the side of the road *shudder* |

If I'm getting wine its a 45 minute round trip because the 30 minute grocery store is in a dry county. I'm in the middle of the bible belt ya know.

Oh yeah...I remember those days. Literally six feet the other side of the county line was a liquor store. It was almost as funny as the Strip in Lubbock, all lit up like it was Vegas.
The best parties I ever attended were the ones the Sheriff threw...lots and lots of confiscated alcohol that had to be disposed of in a timely fashion |

Yeah, growing up I stood by the road and poured out an entire cooler of beer and malt duck (I'm showing my age), courtesy of the constable. Little did I know, the only reason I didn't go to jail for minor in possession was because my dad was due to spread fertilizer on his ranch that Monday - he recognized my name, which is unusual.

I remember when I was living in one of them that the county was one of only a few that voted against the scratch-off tickets. Funny thing about those hypocrites though...by 10AM on the first day of sales, there was not a ticket to be had ANYWHERE in the county- they were SOLD OUT!!! |

| Yes, dry counties, and you can't buy anything that is over 19% alcohol by volume in the State of Texas on Sundays. If you are ever here, you will note that package stores have two doors, and the 19+% on one side and anything under that on the other.

This is crazy if this is what you're telling me. You mean people in dry counties don't drink or they have to go miles and miles just to get their drink on?
What is the purpose of not selling liquor???

There is a town a bit away from here called Tyler. Its known as the "wettest dry spot in TX", because EVERY restaurant sells liquor - you just can't purchase for consumption at home. There is not a restaurant in my county though that serves alcohol. Quote: |

| So the Baptists sleep well at night knowing that if any of their membership is drinking, it ain't on their watch.

| Well, in the dry counties, there is two ways of getting a drink...one is for the restaurant to "sell" a membership (usually a dollar or two) and then you drink on premises. I actually had a facility owner give me my membership when I was doing tournament club bowling many years ago... I also was a member of the local country club and we just paid our tab at the end of the month...lots of beer went into ice chests on the back of the golf carts when we made the turn after the 9th hole.
The other way is that a township can vote to be wet. When I was in a dry county in West Texas, there was a family that basically gave land away to some migrant workers, made them citizens with the unwritten proviso that they would vote the family in as the town council. Town votes to go wet, they get their permits, wait 90 days to start selling and then made a killing on overpriced beer and wine...the 90 day wait was due to regulations that allowed a permit to be yanked for the violations that occur in the first 90 days of the permit being issued. If you look real hard, you might find Los Ybanez on a Texas map. Population was listed as 32 in the 2000 census... |

| But the good news about my county Centex - the local barbershop sells Dublin Dr. Pepper.
You will be happy to know it escaped today's flames.

| I live in a very "wet" state with two other within 20 minutes of driving time...you can buy between the hours of 6am to 2am Monday through Saturday, and after 1pm on Sundays. The only time you can't get a drink is on election days - primary or general.

| Oh yeah Roybean - if you want to buy 19+ liquor for at home consumption in a wet county, you better do it before 9:00 pm, otherwise you are stuck with beer, wine, and such.

Come on, they just gonna make me be sober when I vote???

I am considering buying a house in the country, but I don't know now. Are you so far out in the country that you can't order a pizza? How far is Jack in the Box, or Burger King, or Taco Bell?
