Maybe I just never noticed it before...

I ordered a new top for the jeep online. Because the company does have bricks and mortar shop in TX, I had to pay sales tax - no problem.

But they charged me tax on the shipping costs? Is that right?

States are so varied in this as well as different counties in the same state.
Here is some info,so it looks like YES they can charge a tax on the shipping as well as the sales tax.

DESCRIPTION:
State - Tax is imposed on all retail sales, leases and rentals of most goods, as well as taxable services.

City - Texas cities have the option of imposing an additional local sales tax for a combined total of state and local taxes of 8 1/4% (.0825)

County - Texas counties have the option of imposing an additional local sales tax for a combined total of state and local taxes of 8 1/4% (.0825).

Transit - Texas transit authorities have the option of imposing an additional local sales tax for a combined total of state and local taxes of 8 1/4%(.0825).

Special Purpose Districts - Texas special purpose districts have the option of imposing an additional local sales tax for a combined total of state and local taxes of 8 1/4%(.0825).

Guys (Gals, actually):

I work with State Sales Tax all of the time and yes, shipping is considered a taxable item. However, the "Transit" tax that they're referring to above does not refer to the shipment of an item, it refers to a tax imposed by a metro transit authority (Jylnn should probably be familiar with the Dallas Area Rapid Transit, who manages the city buses around town). The bus/rail systems get a piece of the tax pie as long as the 6.25% state tax added together with the city tax amount and the MTA tax don't go over 8.25%.

Shipping is governed by the linked section of the Texas Administrative Code...
