Most of these work-at-home schemes are scams. As you've probably noticed, they want their money up front. And you probably won't make enough to get it back.
Selling Avon or Tupperware or some other product where you can do shows or take orders can work, but they usually involve some sort of investment as well.
The best thing to do is read through your local paper, and if some jobs seem like the type that could be done at home, call and ask. Sometimes a bookkeeping firm that caters to small businesses may have some work you can do at home. If you have training in anything like computer programming, some businesses may have work you can do at home at your own pace. But it isn't easy to find, you'll have to do some digging.
