It is very easy for college kids to get a first card...but look out for the interest fees and the "tricky" hooks they have in them. Some can add charge after charge when you aren't even using it.

You can get a bank account first....set up some credit by getting a small loan based on money you have in your account or in savings.....Borrow that same amount, then pay it back quickly and in good payments...to get a good rating from them. You can repeat this and build up a credit rating with your own bank...based on money you have put there.

You can also get a small account at a department store, or buy a car and pay it back in really good time, etc. and build up your credit rating. Then you can get a credit card with better interest rates....you can get one from anywhere...so check around where you can get the best card...then don't over-use it....remember it is used for money you don't have....and the higher your balance, the more interest is building....and they will try to up your limit, to get you to spend more.

A better way is to only charge what you can pay off in the 30 days....you can build your rating, but are not going into debt.
I know some couples who use their cards to build airline credit for flying...then pay it off every month...so they only charge what they know they can handle, and have built up a lot of credit for airline flights.

Just be very careful because credit over-used, can ruin you...and unexpected things can happen!
