What happens with a credit card charge off?

What happens when a credit card gets charged off? I know it goes to collections and stays there for 7 years, but will they sue? Will our wages be garnished? Quite honestly, I don't care if they do the charge off and mess up our credit...but I don't want to be sued and I don't want my wages garnished. The amount on this particular card is probably about $3,000.

Our credit card bills are from about 7 years when we were straight out of college, and in the past year (I was pregnant and very sick), it's been harder and harder to pay them. So as of right now, I'd rather them charge them off, (and live with the low credit score) and be able to have money to feed and take care of my family, rather than try to make the monthly payments. Also, I just made a payment last month to this particular card, now they are threatening me with charge-off as of tomorrow....are they bluffing, since I just made a payment last month? (I did not pay for several months prior though).
Thanks!

It is really bad news and it depends if the new creditor decides to collect. Some credit card companies assign to a new creditor when they charge off.

I had this issue years ago........

You need to write a brief letter to the cred.card co. saying "due to financial difficulties I cannot pay the full amount owed on acct#_______ but I will be paying a minimum of $__ each month until my situation improves. Sorry for this inconvenience".

Send a check with this letter for at least $20. and keep sending this letter each month with another $20.
In most states, after they cash the first check it obliges them to keep taking these payments as a new contract. If they threaten court action, don't worry.....no judge would garnish wages from you when you attempted to make it write and are sending regular payments of any amount to them.

Also, if it gets turned over to a collection company the same rules apply. The interest usually stops after it goes to a collections company once you start making regular payments until paid off.
