How Do I go about removing a bad entry on my credit report?

I have a problem with Capital one, who has always seemed to be unreasonable with any efforts to remedy situations.
I had a problem paying a bill while in college, and it was charged off. I did end up paying it. With over 700 FICO score i can't get a private student loan to attend grad school, because of this one loan charge off account on my credit history. Like usual, Capital One is unreasonable and not willing to work out a resolution on a situation that occured over 3 years ago. Any idea what I can do?
slabberdasken, that is what i figured, but Capital One has never been reasonable in the first place. They have always acted like they have no incentive to work with me....reason while I'll never carry one of their cards again.

Two things, is Capital One collecting this themselves or are they using an OCA? If they are collecting for themselves and you paid them then they can do whatever they like.
If you are working with an OCA they MAY be able to help. Ask if the debt is a "debt purchase" account. If it is then they are allowed to do what they want and not want the company they contract with forces them to do.
Also know the statute of limitations in your state. Everyone will say 7 years but that is not true. Some states it is as little as three. You can look it up online.
You can also dispute this amount for whever reason you want, in writing. They say 30 days but most places will allow the dispute anytime.
Read up on the FDCPA and the FCRA and know your rights and that stats of limits in your state. Be armed with facts when you talk to them .
If they are unreasonable you can also dispute with Equifax, Experien and TransUnion. They sometimes will remove things with the companies won't but when you fill out the dispute form be very clear and concise.
Good luck
