It's probably not your credit that the bank is hung up on. If you have awful credit they will typically still give you a checking account but will deny you some extra perks such as a debit card and overdraft account. If they are denying you for an account itself, you probably owe money to another bank for an account you walked away from. Most banks in the country use a database provided by the NCPS or chexsystems or some other carrier and if you come up as owing money to another bank they won't open one for you until you clear up that debt. The banks themselves sign up as members and pay a fee. It's a way the banks try to help one another so consumers can't overdraw their accounts and simply walk away without paying it back. Ask the bank which denied you about it, they should have a card or phone number for the ncps which you can then call and they can tell you how much you owe and to whom. You then pay it off, get taken off the database, and can open an account where you want. Your only other hope is to find a bank so small that they don't use that system, chances are they will get bought eventually by somebody that does.
