Even though you have bad credit, and your credit score is low, are you still able to rent...

...an apartment? My credit is down at the moment, and my credit score is kind of low...is it possible I would be able to still rent an apartment and would they give it to me?

Thank you

It really depends.. landlords want to know that youll be able to pay your rent and on time. Having bad credit means you are a risk in these areas, and so unless they are desperate they're likely to prefer someone with a better history. But all is not lost. There may be places willing to rent to you and in the worst case you can have someone like your parents co-sign for you to guarantee payment of rent. Otherwise you should build your score up =)

Here are my 10 steps you can use to build your credit score quickly. I raised mine to well over 700 points fro 500 using these steps in less than a year:

1. Know and Track Your Credit Score (be sure to sign up for the free trial of your credit score monitoring listed on the article below. It really helped my get my score up.)
2. Never Miss a Payment, Starting Today
3. Never use more than 20% of your Available Credit
4. Keep Credit Cards that Have No Annual Fees Open For as Long as Possible
5. Extend Your Credit Limit on Cards You Already Have before You Get New Ones
6. Get Credit Cards that Have CashBack Rewards to Contribute to your Balance
7. Transfer Your Balance to a Credit Card with a Lower Interest Rate and a Higher Available Credit-
8. If You Think You Are Going to be FORCED to Pay a Bill Late Ask for an Extension or Payment Plan
9. Take out a Small Personal Loan and Repay it Over a Year
10. Ask Someone With Good Credit if They will Account Shadow you

When you're trying to build a solid credit score it's important to get a comprehensive view of what is actually effecting it...

Your Credit Score (also known as your MyFico score) is calculated with the following breakdown:

* 35% -> History of Payments
* 30% -> Debt to Credit Ratio (available credit)
* 15% -> Credit History (length of open accounts)
* 10% -> New Credit (are you expanding your credit)
* 10% -> Credit Types in Use (varied credit types from loans to credit cards)

If you excel in one area and lack in another, only fixing the areas which you lack are going to improve your score.

You can read more about these tips on my blog: How Can I Increase My Credit Score

Hope it helps!! and good luck!

If the place at which you'll be renting requires a credit check it will be up to the discretion of the landlord or managing agent. If you are refused, look for a nice two family house that rents out one of the 'apartments' and will build your credit.

Hello there! Believe me I am in the same boat as you. I had problems finding places to rent, becuase my credit is bad/low..I am now trying to fix it. I would like to buy a house one day since I hate throwing my money away on rent.

I was able to rent an apt with the help of my boyfriends grandfather, since his credit was good. They definitely do credit checks when you rent. Second, they will check your income/taxes to make sure you make enough to pay the actual rent. I had help so I was lucky..alone, they wouldnt have allowed me to rent.

I also rented a home from a landlord..who didnt do a credit check or a job check..and another lady I called up once who was renting a house..was all ready to rent to me right away as long as I agreed to pay the 1500.00 in rent each month.

So you never know. My suggestions would be to A.talk to a real estate agent to help you out, and tell her/him your situation and see if a family member will sign on the lease with you.

B. Look in the paper for people reting their homes outright..meaning you are only going through them..not a real estate office. I have better luck that way.

Look and search real hard...Good Luck!
